UMaine Women’s Rugby

I’m part of the rugby team and tend to try and capture as much of the team as possible. Rugby is an underrepresented sport that not a lot of people are familiar with so I’m trying to change that. The main content of my story would be what it’s like to be part of the rugby team and what our season looks like once it starts. I’d like to develop a couple of player profiles for some of the girls in the team because I think their stories of how they started playing rugby and where they came from would be an interesting one to tell. Besides the character content, rugby also lends itself to the possibility of many interesting action shots and dynamic movements shots.

I think the people who would be interested in this story would be people who don’t know much about rugby but also people on campus who are involved or interested in athletics. The reason why I think this would be an interesting story for people who don’t know a lot about rugby is because they would be able to learn about the sport and what it’s like without having to go through it. Some people who are interested in rugby are afraid of the physical contact aspect so this would be a good way for them to see what it’s like without having to worry about that. As for the people who are involved or interested in athletics, with this story they can learn a little bit about how the rugby team came to be and what its current stage is. Many alumni come back to campus for sports events because of either school spirit or they participated in sports themselves so I think this would be a good way of keeping them updated.

The Lucky One

There’s a reason why my puppy Lucky is called Lucky and every time I find myself telling the story to someone I think it’s funny. Lucky is a Dominican dog because I adopted him from the Dominican Republic. My mom actually was the one who named him Lucky because she ran into his owners when she went to grab dinner at a restaurant. As she was walking in, Lucky’s owners had him in their hands and my mom asked to pet him. Funny enough, Lucky’s then owners told my mom that they had just gotten back from the shelter where they tried putting Lucky up for adoption but they didn’t have space in the shelter. So my mom got Lucky from them and she named him Lucky because she says he was lucky she was there exactly when she was. Then I had to fly to the Dominican Republic to get Lucky and bring him back with me.

I think this story would be interesting for people who are thinking about getting a dog. I think it would show them that adoption is an option and that dogs come in all shapes and forms. I think it might be interesting for people to know Lucky’s story because he is adopted and he is a better option than if I would’ve chosen to buy a dog. I think it would also help people realize that sometimes you just have to open your heart to a new member of the family. There’s many dogs that are euthanized every single year in shelters but that could stop if we each opened our homes to one of them.

  • Both of these topics have potential as a story. Given that many people don’t know much about rugby, how can you tell its story? is your focus on the sport? or on a person who’s a player? In a conventional narrative, the protagonist meets an obstacle or challenge, then a crisis, which changes him/her. Can you develop the plot more fully?

The same would apply to Lucky. Who or what changes in the story? How can images show the change?

    Satisfactory
