Assignment 5_FrankO

My first visit to Brockton Massachusetts, I came across this artwork. My friend who lives there informed me that the art work has a meaning. Obviously the city of champions, is dedicated to the New England Patriots, and their legacy of an organization that’s all about winning. The mural with the boxer, my friend told me that it was dedicated to Rocky Marciano, who was born in Brockton, and has a career record of 49 wins 0 losses. The mural with the Brockton Shoe Industry, I was told that factories in Brockton made shoes for soldiers during the World War. While visiting my friend I learned a lot about his town of Brockton Massachusetts.

Assignment #5

So every ear my fraternity raises over 2,000 dollars for Bangor Rape Response service. We have a huge bon fire in the middle of the winter from 6pm to 6am in the hours that most rapes occur. On this rainy cold night in November we had one of the best turnouts for the Sleepout we have ever had. The first few photos are of when president Hunter came out to give a few words of encouragement and let us know how proud the university is of us for having one off the most profitable Philanthropy event on campus.

After president Hunter gave a quick speech the University of Maine women’s accepella group sang a few fun and uplifting songs for us. After that we were on for the challenge of staying up all night in the rain and cold because we said we would as people pledged money to us. It was one of the most successful Beta Sleepouts we have ever had raising just under 3,000 dollars for Bangor Rape Response.

Assignment 5_PaulK

The White Mountains are particularly unforgiving in the winter months, but are constantly seeing wind and temperature record breaking numbers. Having grown up in the foothills of the Whites, I am familiar with the terrain and how quickly conditions can change the highest peaks of the 4 thru 6 thousand footers. Among the most dangerous mountains in the world, Mount Washington has challenged adventurers for centuries with its severe weather. From the days when people ascended the mountains in hoop skirts and wool suits to today’s high-tech assaults on wintry summits, this book offers extensive profiles of people who found trouble on New Hampshire’s Presidential Range, from the nineteenth century through present day. Pretty much all the stories tell of death and the cause. In an environmental based high school english class we had read Not Without Peril. The book just makes you feel so vulnerable to the chance of weather. Granted it takes quite some will power to want to summit the mountain in blustery winter conditions, some days provide bluebird conditions like that of the day I took these photos. We did not summit Mt Washington, due to wind chill temperatures. I had three camera batteries on my person, but as soon as we were exposed to the wind coming from the north side, the camera would not function easily in the cold.

Assignment 5_BradG

The first gallery here is telling a story of my walk through a National Wildlife Refuge in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. There are fences that are made to keep people out so that the animals, primarily in this case birds, can be protected and undisturbed since many of them are endangered. However, people being of the nature that they are, will never leave something alone simply because of a fence. The area in the thickets and off of an observation deck are specked with a surprising amount of refuse and litter. This ends up causing harm to not only the animals in the refuge, but also those in environments that are directly surrounding it and in general. In this case those places are the ocean and the marsh shown in picture five.

The second gallery shown here is supposed to be sort of representative of the story of a rock over time. Throughout the lifetime of rocks, they start as chunks of earth that eventually get ground down and split off either from nature or interaction with man, making boulders as shown in the first image. The second image is of the same line of boulders, but these have over time fallen off the rock wall that is used to separate the ocean from the river. This stone will over long periods of time be swept into the ocean and whittled down by the currents. The third image shows a pebble that has washed up on shore. This is the workings of the ocean on a rock like a boulder and how it resolves to shrink stones down. Image four shows what all rocks eventually become when left to nature’s devices; sand. All sand on earth are the tiny remnants of boulders from long ago. Eventually, this sand may be harvested by humans to make things such as glass, as shown in image five.

Assignment 5_KaitlynC

In my first gallery,  the story is about traveling, these photos were taken in France from a trip I went on in high school. Over Spring Break, I am going on a road trip to Halifax with my friend. So my second idea for a story is to capture some photos while I’m exploring there (with some freedom.) I have done some traveling in the past, but I have never been out of the country without some sort of adult supervision, so this will be a new experience for me.

In my second gallery, I attempt to tell a story about nature. It is very easy to go about your everyday life without taking a moment to appreciate what is around you. The other day I was walking to my car from class the other day and the sky looked really nice and for some reason really stood out to me, so I decided to stop and capture these photos.

Assignment 5_RobertM

First story idea, is to just take photos surrounding the gender norms society has placed on everyone as a whole. It’s a fragile topic, and I think it needs to be spoken about more. So for this story, i’d like to make it various smaller stories, with just two pictures, one of a person representing their expected gender norms, and another trying to shatter that. For example, my roommate took a feminine picture where clothes intended for girls, and then another with a more masculine pose wearing my clothes. I’m also pictured in a pink sweatshirt, with my roommates make up on, and then next to it in my normal clothes not wearing any make up as I usually do.

Another idea I have is taking photos of my trip to Toronto over spring break. I’m visiting a friend who’s going to school there, and I’d like to document my trip, especially “a night on the town”. I’d probably use my phone for this one, because I don’t trust myself with a camera in an unfamiliar city if I’m potentially not going to be sober.

Assignment 5 SamW

In this series of photos, I attempt to tell the story of one of my close friends.

In my first gallery, I chose to create a photo series on my shoes. Considering that I don’t go anywhere without my shoes I think that they represent the story of where I go and where I’ve been pretty well. The changing backgrounds give a small teasing look into the different places I go daily, while still keeping it a slight mystery.

I think that this would pull the attention of both people interested in portraits as well as landscape as I tried to blend the two together. These photos are fully un-edited, When I edit them I am going to keep the similar color scheme that I went with which was focusing on blacks, whites, greens, and browns. Josh practices dance every day, it’s a profession that Is very hard to make work, but he pushes through his challenges every day.

Assignment 5_MarcusC

A perspective on the inside of each baseball stadium from my seat and made it intriguing to make it look like these pictures were part of a story in a book. Traveled from Maine to Missouri one summer for a baseball class and attended several major and minor league games.

From walking into Kauffman Stadium during the first pitch, to enjoying Independence Day in Cincinnati, to experiencing a minor league park in Columbus, to seeing a half-empty stadium in Cleveland, and getting a police escort on the way to the Mets game, this journey from the Midwest back to the East Coast proves to hold something spectacular at every stadium.

From the beginning of the school year, updates on the consumption of pizza that five of us have contributed to. Thanks to Pat’s Pizza and OHOP, good deals on pizza are the go to as the eye can see.

Starting out with a small tower of 23 boxes, we continued to demolish the pizza and add to the magnificent Leaning Tower of Pizza. Became too many for just one tower, so a second came along, and with too many again, the Leaning Arch was born. Notice the addition of the dart board, which is in the perfect place between the boxes.

The goal is to hit at least 100 by the end of the semester, and we’re sure we’ll eclipse that mark. In college, it’s all in good fun with scrumptious pizza, and it has never expressed disappointment in our hearts.

Assignment 5-AlyssaD

This story is about a girl who is going on spring break with her friends for the first time without her parents or any family members. Every college students are always dreaming about going somewhere with their friends. These three photos represent what to do before the vacation and what responsibilities come up while traveling. College students tend to be able to be on there own and with friends during spring break so that means a lot of smart decisions. Maturity and trust also come into play during a vacation like this. This story is going to be the adventure of this young girl and the challenges she is going to face throughout her vacation.

My audience would be anyone who is going on spring break and needs advice on what to do while they are on there own. Such as checking what flight they are on, not missing there flights, not taking drinks from strangers, to remember passport, wallet, money etc. There are so many things that go into a vacation like this and a lot of lessons learned when the person comes back.

Assignment 5—FrankS

This narrative is about a musician who is struggling to find a way to produce good songs that they are proud of but there always seems to be something in the way. They use alcohol to cope with their problems but also to allow them to produce better music. There are many musicians out there that use addiction and sadness to produce meaningful pieces that people can relate to. This narrative would be an example of this type of musical creation.

The audience for this piece might be people who are interested in dark photography. In the past I have created other videos or photos that have a very dark style and it seems to interest people the most. Most people could relate to something like this because most people have probably struggled with something in their life and coped with it in a negative way. I hope that these photographs can resonate with people like the do with me.

The overall content of this story is that there is a girl who makes herself the same mundane peanut butter and jelly sandwich everyday and never breaks her normal behavior. At this point in her life she is not very happy and wants to break out of her comfort zone and experience new things. The PB&J sandwich serves as an object that represents the girl’s old life and that she constantly wants to go back to that life. Her new life could be represented by another type of sandwich or something else that causes her to experience more. I guess the overall message of the story is that we all have our comfort zones and sometimes its better to be risky rather than stay on the safe side.

The audience for this piece would be anyone who can connect with the concept of struggling to get out of their comfort zones and have new experiences. I think that this would be interesting to explore and interpret because the pictures I took don’t exactly depict the story the way I wanted them too but I think by getting the story more concrete I can mend a narrative that is based around the sandwich. I also think people would be interested in this because this idea is very obscure and interpretive as well as comical which people may find interesting.

UMaine Women’s Rugby

I’m part of the rugby team and tend to try and capture as much of the team as possible. Rugby is an underrepresented sport that not a lot of people are familiar with so I’m trying to change that. The main content of my story would be what it’s like to be part of the rugby team and what our season looks like once it starts. I’d like to develop a couple of player profiles for some of the girls in the team because I think their stories of how they started playing rugby and where they came from would be an interesting one to tell. Besides the character content, rugby also lends itself to the possibility of many interesting action shots and dynamic movements shots.

I think the people who would be interested in this story would be people who don’t know much about rugby but also people on campus who are involved or interested in athletics. The reason why I think this would be an interesting story for people who don’t know a lot about rugby is because they would be able to learn about the sport and what it’s like without having to go through it. Some people who are interested in rugby are afraid of the physical contact aspect so this would be a good way for them to see what it’s like without having to worry about that. As for the people who are involved or interested in athletics, with this story they can learn a little bit about how the rugby team came to be and what its current stage is. Many alumni come back to campus for sports events because of either school spirit or they participated in sports themselves so I think this would be a good way of keeping them updated.

The Lucky One

There’s a reason why my puppy Lucky is called Lucky and every time I find myself telling the story to someone I think it’s funny. Lucky is a Dominican dog because I adopted him from the Dominican Republic. My mom actually was the one who named him Lucky because she ran into his owners when she went to grab dinner at a restaurant. As she was walking in, Lucky’s owners had him in their hands and my mom asked to pet him. Funny enough, Lucky’s then owners told my mom that they had just gotten back from the shelter where they tried putting Lucky up for adoption but they didn’t have space in the shelter. So my mom got Lucky from them and she named him Lucky because she says he was lucky she was there exactly when she was. Then I had to fly to the Dominican Republic to get Lucky and bring him back with me.

I think this story would be interesting for people who are thinking about getting a dog. I think it would show them that adoption is an option and that dogs come in all shapes and forms. I think it might be interesting for people to know Lucky’s story because he is adopted and he is a better option than if I would’ve chosen to buy a dog. I think it would also help people realize that sometimes you just have to open your heart to a new member of the family. There’s many dogs that are euthanized every single year in shelters but that could stop if we each opened our homes to one of them.
