Assignment 6_TannerM

Here’s the short of it, during spring break of 2018 I will be going out to California to see my brother, Evan, who I haven’t seen since winter break 2017. However, going out there will give me the opportunity to see his apartment for the first time and getting to see/know the area that he’s in. While on the trip though I will take multiple photos, tons of photos so that I can document my trip and then be able to retell it through some text, but mostly pictures. To give some beginning to this project here are two images of the airports that I will be flying into and out of. From Boston to California.

I am considering doing a story about the voyages of 4 friends sailing upon the ocean, recently I completed a trip from Belfast Maine to Marblehead Massachusetts. The trip took 36 hours and involved sailing overnight. During the journey we passed by many beautiful places and saw whales, dolphins and various ocean birds. The story would follow the individuals and the struggles of the crew. The photos bellow are a demonstration of some of the content that I took on the trip. I love taking photos on the ocean, the amount of light and varying conditions make each photo unique.

“Chuck and Charlotte’s Spring Adventures”

For this project, I set out to capture the day-to-day life of several groundhogs living on campus. Though only two appear in the photographs together, I briefly glimpsed a third. This is a little unusual, since groundhogs (also known as woodchucks and whistle pigs) are not typically social creatures. They are usually only seen together during mating season, but this happens to coincide with the coming of spring and their emergence from hibernation. This was a foray into wildlife photography and I utilized a high shutter speed to capture their actions as they readjusted to the world around them.

Assignment 12 – CullenS

Oskar

My dog has escaped a few times from my house. Me being the overly curious person I am, has always wondered what he did when he escaped. So, for a day, I let him off his leash as much as, safely, possible, and see where we would end up. To my surprise, we ended up all the way from my house, to downtown Bangor. This gave me a lot of interesting perspective on what my dog thinks, and certainly made me get more creative with my photography skills due to his constant movement. For being such a little dog, it always surprises me how big his personality is.

Circuition

My sister Mikala became pregnant in the spring of 2017.  It was a genuine shock to her 22 year old self because she wasn’t trying to conceive and certainly wasn’t prepared for all the responsibilities that come with being a parent.  My family and I thought for sure my sister wasn’t in a position to have a child.  She had spend the last few years lost and isolated and there were times we thought life was just going to wash her away and she’d be taken from us forever.

I watched her, for nine months, grow from 95 pounds of nothing to 120 pounds of a little something.  Each month of her pregnancy brought her closer to the family again and we were starting to become more hopeful of her future.  She was looking healthier, taking more pride in her self image and forming better habits.  I was pleasantly astounded by how open she had become with us.  Even through all the progress my sister had made, my mother and I had our reservations.  She had been diagnosed with a mental illness when she was a teenager and it was a big reason why she started making unhealthy choices.  We were aware of the high rate of postpartum depression in mothers who suffered from mental illness and were concerned this debilitating condition might hijack my sisters progress.  We tried to establish a plan of action.  My mother talked briefly about moving my sister and her boyfriend in with them but there wasn’t enough room in her and my fathers congested mobile home.  My family realized we were going to have to handle this situation on our toes.

At 9 a.m. on Feb. 3, She started feeling the early signs of labor.  She was in the hospital within the hour but it would prove to be a long day and harrowing night.  My sister spent the whole day managing her contractions well, they were very far apart and it was clear by the afternoon that we were all in for a long night.  My sister sat in the hospital bed, getting up to walk once in a while in hopes to increase labor, as family members poured in and out of the hospital room all day.  Daylight faded into moonlight and the contractions got more intense.  Eventually, even the epidural couldn’t suppress the pain.  My sister spent the early hours of Feb. 4 writhing in pain.  My mother, my sisters boyfriend and myself sat helplessly beside her, watching her suffer knowing there was nothing we could do.  This was something she had to go through, a journey only she could complete.  Every difficulty, pain, anxiety and panic she had experienced as a lost young girl in the last few years were being manifested in this one night.  We didn’t know if she was strong enough to overcome it all again.  And then she did.  There was this slimy pale little alien like creature whining on her chest and all the bad was gone.  I watched this little human quietly respond to my sisters whimpers from across the room where they were weighing her and cleaning her up.  She was aware of every noise my sister made, as if she was still tethered to her.  It was a moment of bond I will never forget.

My baby niece is now almost four months old and the bond between her and my sister has grown stronger.  It has been an amazing experience to watch my sister grow in this way and overcome her past and the obstacles that were in her way.  As her big sister I have always tried to guide her and be the person she needed but I realize now there is nothing I could have done.  My sister needed to find the strength inside her to overcome her obstacles.  My baby niece is the person who has given her a whole new reason to live and thrive.  A new understanding of life.  It’s been about a year since her life changed completely and I never could have imagined her becoming the person she is now.  I have a new hope for her future and feel like I have a sister again.

CIRCUITION

Assignment12_LizzyG

This is the story I decided to tell. I wanted to show the trip my family took to Boston to go see a Bruins game in early March. However, as I was taking these photos. I noticed that I was really drawn into seeing things from the perspective of my 10 year old brother. I tried to take my pictures as if I was him and the lense of my cannon was how I could see things as if I was that little again. I wanted to capture the wonder that a little small town boy would see driving to a big city like Boston. I saw his mood shift while we were driving and got closer and closer. So it strated as boring highway signs to seeing a huge, shinny city for the first time. Gillen's Family Trip to Boston

Assignment 11_AdamM

While taking these pictures, not only was it cloudy but it was around 8pm so I didn’t have much light to work with. I had to keep the ISO high for all of the photos. I felt there were a lot of nice things to capture in the limited space I had on a back deck. I am becoming better with quickly adjusting my settings when I need to, and generally having a better eye for things.

Assignment7_ElizabethD

Over Spring Break I visited the Yarmouth area and found the power lines by the beach to be very fascinating, especially since a storm was coming in.  Additionally, I wanted to photograph what little life there was on the beach for that time of year.

Canon Rebel T5i EF-S18-135mmm f/3.5-5.6 ISO 1600

Typically while I’m taking photos, I’m pretty happy to have a cloudy day. While taking this set though, I noticed how all of my photos came out pretty muted. Initially I thought this was just going to be something I would post process color into and decided to leave my camera settings the same for every shot. Upon editing some of these photos I came to really enjoy the consistent color palette and decided to leave them them (mostly) untouched. This let me draw parallels between the brick on the buildings, to the rust on my car, to the wires inside an industrial fan, to the grass on the ground and my boots.  I tried to take photos from a lot of different view points, like laying on the ground, climbing up a pillar, very close up and far away, and am most satisfied with the pictures I took this way. I definitely want to experiment more with different angles in the future.

Assignment 11 – TateY

Elements – Visible and Invisible

Overall I started out each photo just trying to get the exposure correct, and then I changed the settings based off of what I was trying to go for. For instance, trying to capture depth, I knew that a shallower depth of field would be best, so I put my f-stop as open as possible, and then adjusted the other settings to keep the exposure correct. There were certain elements like “light” photograph where I had to lower the settings as much as possible because the light was pouring through the cracks of the window shade, but I didn’t want to overexpose it. The moon and tree photo was another interesting photo to take, because I thought I had to set the aperture to make the depth of field as large as possible, but the problem was that it was too dark, so I set the f-stop back to 6.3 and then set the focal length just shy of “infinity,” to keep the tree and moon in focus. Overall, the various elements really made me think about how to take the photo rather than just what the subject will be.

Assignment11_SydneyH

These photos were posted on the 17th of April; I just forgot to add the category “Assignment 11”.

I wanted to capture the texture of all of the objects in their organic settings.
The first photo was bark on a tree near the student union. It was a very sunny day, but the closer I got to the tree the colder I felt. The grey colors blend with the crags of the bark to create a barren landscape.
In the second photo, I want to capture the warmth of light pink petals as they sit in the sun. The shadows in the background make the feeling of a spotlight on the flowers even more prominent. This photo is peaceful and provides a sense of contentment.
The third photo is the epitome of quiet. The endless shelves of books with the sun streaming in the from the windows is very meditative.
I wanted to add the fourth photo to this collection as looking at it transports me to the beach. The light gives the gray sand dimension. I look at it and feel as if I could reach through the screen and press my hand into the sand.

Added Images as of 5/1/2018

I wanted to add these photos because they each illuminated the texture of their subjects.
The first frame shows a piece of wood that I found in my local forest. The undulating form of the wood grains gives a unique contrast to the industrial numbering that is also present.
The second photo is of some dried snowberries that I found lying around. It is evident that the fruits lack moisture, yet the color makes them look vital.
The final frame is of an abandoned lobster trap in my hometown. The photo reveals the severe rust that has damaged the structure. When I look at it, I fear tetanus that is how palpable it is. The blue of the trap pops against the grey of the rocks and the ruddy brown of the rust.

This class has been a learning experience for me for sure. Prior to this class I had not alot of expereince with DSLR. Now I am proud to say that I own my own Cannon T6 Rebel and I take photos almost every day. The skills I have learned have helped me in so many areas. I have learned how to tell a story through my photos rather then my words. Although I feel as though my photos do not compare to all of the other students in this class, I think that I have learned so many things. This had to be my most challenging class this semster because all of these topics used to be forgein to me. I’m super greatful for this experience and all of the things i have learned. I love having the tools to capture my favorite moments in life.

Assignment8_LizzyG

I walk by this spot in Little hall each Tuesday and Thursday of my week. When the sun is shinning I am always so brought into this spot. I thouht that it was a great canidate for HDR. I am still learning how to detect when things are canidates for HDR. I am really happy however, with how this photo came out. I really love how the greens of the tree outside the window really draws my eye in. And the slight red of the brick on the side makes the green look even greener.

Assignment9_KendraC

Assignment8_vanDuijn

I used sliders to convey the difference between the HDR and normal versions of the photos. I found that the HDR images seem to increase detail, while also increases light from the source, but decreasing shadow. The settings I used for the following images made the camera capture 5 consecutive photos and layer them.

Evening sun back home in my families extremely messy bathroom, I thought it was interesting how HDR effects the reflections cast by the windows on the wall. As you slide the slider you can see how detail in the window reflections change.

The moon the night after it was full, you can see in the craters how the HDR photo captures more detail and increases over all contrast.

Assignment 9 – Tate Y – Panorama

I’ve done a few panoramas of landscapes before so I figured I would do something a bit more urban. One of the best aspects about panoramas (in my opinion) is that they give you the perspective of actually being there, or at least more so than a single photo. Sometimes they can be a bit too much and unnecessary, but for the right use they can really bring out the vast feeling of being in a certain place. I figured most people know the feeling of walking about of the library after a long day of work, so I wanted to mimic that feeling by capturing as much of the mall as possible just before a sunset.

9 images might have been a bit too much, but I wanted to make sure I captured as much data as possible for Lightroom to stitch them together without any trouble.
