The Invisible and visible

Assignment11_CleoB

Assignment 11_AdamM

While taking these pictures, not only was it cloudy but it was around 8pm so I didn’t have much light to work with. I had to keep the ISO high for all of the photos. I felt there were a lot of nice things to capture in the limited space I had on a back deck. I am becoming better with quickly adjusting my settings when I need to, and generally having a better eye for things.

Typically while I’m taking photos, I’m pretty happy to have a cloudy day. While taking this set though, I noticed how all of my photos came out pretty muted. Initially I thought this was just going to be something I would post process color into and decided to leave my camera settings the same for every shot. Upon editing some of these photos I came to really enjoy the consistent color palette and decided to leave them them (mostly) untouched. This let me draw parallels between the brick on the buildings, to the rust on my car, to the wires inside an industrial fan, to the grass on the ground and my boots.  I tried to take photos from a lot of different view points, like laying on the ground, climbing up a pillar, very close up and far away, and am most satisfied with the pictures I took this way. I definitely want to experiment more with different angles in the future.

Elements – Visible and Invisible

Overall I started out each photo just trying to get the exposure correct, and then I changed the settings based off of what I was trying to go for. For instance, trying to capture depth, I knew that a shallower depth of field would be best, so I put my f-stop as open as possible, and then adjusted the other settings to keep the exposure correct. There were certain elements like “light” photograph where I had to lower the settings as much as possible because the light was pouring through the cracks of the window shade, but I didn’t want to overexpose it. The moon and tree photo was another interesting photo to take, because I thought I had to set the aperture to make the depth of field as large as possible, but the problem was that it was too dark, so I set the f-stop back to 6.3 and then set the focal length just shy of “infinity,” to keep the tree and moon in focus. Overall, the various elements really made me think about how to take the photo rather than just what the subject will be.

Assignment11_SydneyH

These photos were posted on the 17th of April; I just forgot to add the category “Assignment 11”.

I wanted to capture the texture of all of the objects in their organic settings.
The first photo was bark on a tree near the student union. It was a very sunny day, but the closer I got to the tree the colder I felt. The grey colors blend with the crags of the bark to create a barren landscape.
In the second photo, I want to capture the warmth of light pink petals as they sit in the sun. The shadows in the background make the feeling of a spotlight on the flowers even more prominent. This photo is peaceful and provides a sense of contentment.
The third photo is the epitome of quiet. The endless shelves of books with the sun streaming in the from the windows is very meditative.
I wanted to add the fourth photo to this collection as looking at it transports me to the beach. The light gives the gray sand dimension. I look at it and feel as if I could reach through the screen and press my hand into the sand.

Added Images as of 5/1/2018

I wanted to add these photos because they each illuminated the texture of their subjects.
The first frame shows a piece of wood that I found in my local forest. The undulating form of the wood grains gives a unique contrast to the industrial numbering that is also present.
The second photo is of some dried snowberries that I found lying around. It is evident that the fruits lack moisture, yet the color makes them look vital.
The final frame is of an abandoned lobster trap in my hometown. The photo reveals the severe rust that has damaged the structure. When I look at it, I fear tetanus that is how palpable it is. The blue of the trap pops against the grey of the rocks and the ruddy brown of the rust.
